A Nugget of Never Knew
Disney has been trying to make human air hockey work since the sixties. Back in 1961, Disneyland first introduced the Flying Saucers ride. The concept was similar to air hockey. Ride carts would hover over air pockets that would lift them, creating the sensation of levitation. Engineers couldn’t overcome the differences in weight from riders that ranged from small children to full-sized adults so the ride was replaced by the Tomorrowland Stage. But Imagineers tried again when Cars Land opened with a ride called Luigi’s Flying Tires, but the same problem persisted. So Disney replaced it within 3 years with Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters.
